"Spook" being both a racial slur and slang for CIA agent, Ivan Dixon's filmization of Sam Greenelee's 1969 novel is one of the most astonishing Hollywood films of the Nixon era. Not merely subversive but a genuinely revolutionary call to arms, it's not exactly polished but it is passionate. Original distributor UA pulled it from circulation for years.
as an 18 year member of the Society for Creative Anachronism (75k members worldwide), i can say that this movie is both inspiring and required viewing for most members. we have progressed to be more authentic to the period, but this film will always show us our roots in well meaning insanity..
Lots of Religious symbolism and biblical parallels in Moby Dick as in Melville's other book to film ,Billy Budd. This would have been perfect if it weren't for Peck,he just isn't creepy or threatening enough...
