Ben Franklin and Tom Jefferson sing their hearts out in Peter Hunt’s movie version of the Tony award winning Broadway show. A musical based on events leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Howard da Silva plays Franklin, Ken Howard is Jefferson, and William Daniels dons the powered wig for John Adams. Martha Jefferson is played by Blythe Danner (lucky Tom).

About Michael Schlesinger

Michael Schlesinger is widely acknowledged as the dean of classic film distributors, having worked for more than 25 years at MGM, Paramount and Sony, keeping hundreds of vintage movies in theatrical release (and later DVD), and instigating the restoration of many more, including the completion of Orson Welles' 1942 documentary It's All True some 50 years later. Behind the camera, he wrote and produced the American version of Godzilla 2000, co-produced such Larry Blamire parodies as The Lost Skeleton Returns Again and Dark and Stormy Night, and has written, produced and directed several short films featuring the faux-1930s comedy team of Biffle and Shooster. No power on Earth will ever convince him that It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World is not the Greatest. Movie. Ever.

I bought the 4K /Blu restoration this year, even though I cannot play the 4k, and do not plan on changing my whole system just for 4k. You just know that 6k, 8k, 10k and so on and so forth are just around the corner to make us buy the same stuff over and over. Anyway, I had not yet upgraded my old DVD to Blu, so this edition, with all of its bonuses (including the original theatrical cut, which I saw in 1972 over and over) is perfect. My favorite musical of all time, just above WEST SIDE STORY. Thanks for the featuring of the trailer, which is kinda weird, you’re right. And I still know every line and every lyric. Perfect show. Perfect cast. And I remember vividly how every audience in the theater was stunned into silence in 1972 when John Cullum finished his thunderous rendition of “Molasses to Rum”. Okay. Now I have to go watch it again. Besides, John Adams is obnoxious and disliked. He needs a friend.
