Billy Wilder's elegant take on Conan Doyle's enduring sleuth never reached theaters in its intended 3-hour Roadshow form, but still ranks as one of the most memorable Holmes outings. It's fairly obscure these days, but perhaps the boxoffice success of the recent Robert Downey vehicle will lead viewers back to sample the remains of what was certainly one of Wilder's best pictures.
as an 18 year member of the Society for Creative Anachronism (75k members worldwide), i can say that this movie is both inspiring and required viewing for most members. we have progressed to be more authentic to the period, but this film will always show us our roots in well meaning insanity..
Lots of Religious symbolism and biblical parallels in Moby Dick as in Melville's other book to film ,Billy Budd. This would have been perfect if it weren't for Peck,he just isn't creepy or threatening enough...
