In a role tailor-made for James Cagney, Ti Lung plays a gangster betrayed by a friend and sent to prison. Upon his release, he tries to reform — but as Cagney could have told him, it ain’t easy. The finely tuned dramatic aspect surprised the masterful action director John Woo’s fans but it had no effect on the film’s success, A Better Tomorrow was number one at the box office in 1986.

About Tim Hunter

Tim Hunter Tim Hunter is the director of River’s Edge, Tex, Saint of Fort Washington, and other features. In TV, he has directed episodes of Twin Peaks, Homicide, the Beverly Hills 90210 pilot, and most recently episodes of Mad Men, Dexter, American Horror Story, Hannibal and others.  Although he doesn’t see retirement from directing coming anytime too soon, Hunter spends much of his down time on an editing bench in Sante Fe cleaning, restoring and repairing old 16mm prints – presumably good for the soul as well as the prints.

I remember watching One Eyed Jacks with Tim in his basement, using a projector that had belonged to Frank Sinatra in Palm Springs. Tim was impressive, changing reels and I was truly happy that he liked the Brando film as much as I. It was his first viewing but, by then, I was quoting from the film almost daily. “Get up, you scum sucking pig.”
