John Landis on

Clash of the Titans

Released 1981
Distributor United Artists

There are plenty of monumental figures in Ray Harryhausen’s Clash of the Titans but the most towering must be Harryhausen himself; released in 1981, the film is a testament to a decades-long career, and if Titans whole doesn’t match up to its parts, what parts they are. Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, Burgess Meredith, and more are on hand — but they pale in comparison to Medusa, one of Harryhausen’s greatest animated sequences… she’s worth sitting through the shenanigans of “Bubo,” a silver and gold robot owl added as, apparently, a sop to the Star Wars crowd.
