Remembering Tom Skerritt

Pairing‌ ‌wine‌ ‌with‌ ‌movies!‌ ‌See‌ ‌the‌ ‌trailers‌ ‌and‌ ‌hear‌ ‌the‌ ‌fascinating‌ ‌commentary‌ ‌for‌ ‌these‌ ‌movies‌ ‌and‌ ‌many‌ ‌more‌ ‌at‌ ‌Trailers‌ ‌From‌ ‌Hell.‌ This week, we bid a fond adieu to the late Tom Skerritt. We have wine pairings, of course, for the toast.

Skerritt plays opposite Drew Barrymore, Sara Gilbert, and Cheryl Ladd in the 1992 erotic thriller Poison Ivy. Directed by TFH Guru Katt Shea, the film has Barrymore as Ivy, seducing, lying, and manipulating her way through an unfortunate family. She’s trying to take mom’s place, and giving it the ol’ high school try. The gal finds out soon enough that success has a price.

The movie didn’t earn its budget at the box office, but it became a fairly wild success on cable and in rentals. Three sequels were spawned, which went directly to video.

Domaine des Fables must have been reading our mail. That French winery has a wine named after the movie. Perhaps it was the other way around, but I wasn’t kept in the loop on that decision. This white wine is made from 100% Jacquère grapes. Don’t feel bad if you don’t recognize it, I had to look it up, too. If you’re interested, it’s a $57 bottle.

Fuzz is a 1972 action comedy. As a 1972 action comedy, could it have starred anyone else but Burt Reynolds and Raquel Welch? A better looking pair of detectives you’d be hard pressed to find. And Reynolds was fresh off his centerfold appearance in Cosmo. But wait, there’s more! For the same low price, you also get Jack Weston, Tom Skerrit and Yul Brenner. Crazy man, crazy. If you call before midnight tonight, we’ll throw in the fabulous Peter Bonerz, whose work on the Bob Newhart Show made him a dentist forever. The story, eh, well, did we mention it stars Burt Reynolds and Raquel Welch?

I didn’t expect this pairing to be so easy. Fuzz, the Gamay and Côt wine, is made by Brendan Tracey. Côt is actually Merlot in that part of the Loire Valley. He also puts his name on wines called Capitalism Rouge, Mellow Yellow and Rue de la Soif. Tracey is New Jersey born, raised in California and lives in the land he loves, France. No offense taken. He sells Fuzz for around $35.

In 1975’s The Devil’s Rain, not only do you get Skerritt, but also in the cast are Ernest Borgnine, Eddie Albert, Ida Lupino, Keenan Wynn, and John Travolta’s film debut, as small as it is. You want more? The founder of the Church of Satan served as the film’s technical advisor. Was she also in the credits for Rosemary’s Baby, too? I don’t know, but those gigs as a Satan expert had to be few and far between. Get ‘em while they’re hot.

The script has a Satanic priest traveling back in time a few centuries to recover a book of contracts giving him the souls of the signees. Gotta wonder how you leave something like that just lying around. It’s nice, though, that he can time travel when he needs to serve eternal damnation to some folks.

For The Devil’s Rain, we could easily lift a glass of Casillero del Diablo wine. That’s Spanish for the devil’s cellar. The little old winemaker started a rumor that the devil guarded his bottles, but he does allow some to escape for a price. A low price, at that. $13 for The Devil’s Red.
