Boogie Nights
Paul Thomas Anderson’s breakthrough film has one of the more unusual storylines for cinematic success: a decades-spanning tale of a Valley boy who strikes it rich (for a while) in the then-thriving ’70s porn industry. Anderson’s empathic style makes this motley crew of sex workers positively endearing. The film follows a top-notch cast headed by Mark Wahlberg as “Dirk Diggler,” a naif who’s headed for a mighty fall. Julianne Moore, Burt Reynolds, Don Cheadle, and Philip Seymour Hoffman are just a few of the scene-stealers in this Altman-esque comedy-drama that, thankfully, has something of a happy ending.
