Gentleman’s Agreement
Before Gregory Peck appeared in To Kill a Mockingbird as a small-town lawyer battling racial prejudice, he starred in this controversial (for 1947) film about an undercover journalist working to expose antisemitism in the big city. Directed by Elia Kazan, the film is thoughtfully cast with the angelic Dorothy McGuire as Peck’s not so angelic girlfriend (she has her own prejudices), and memorably, John Garfield, who brings real-life pain to the role of a Jewish army vet discovering the country he fought for is in the middle of a different kind of fight. The film, Kazan, and McGuire all won Oscars but the movie’s advocation of tolerance made Joe McCarthy’s HUAC suspicious—both Kazan and Garfield were compelled to testify.
