John Landis on

Once Upon a Time in the West

Released 1969
Distributor Paramount

Sergio Leone’s 1968 masterpiece gives the lie to the term “spaghetti western.” In a hastily shortened version it was a box-office disappointment in the U.S. but it played in the same theater in Paris for years. The cast is one for the ages. Henry Fonda, playing one of the great villains in movie history, Jason Robards, Charles Bronson, and most poignantly, Claudia Cardinale, whose presence inspired one of Ennio Morricone’s most memorable melodies, “Jill’s America.”

Clever Name

This is far more than a mere film.

Jenny Agutter fan

Sergio Leone had wanted Henry Fonda for the Dollars trilogy, but he wasn’t available or something.

Leone only did two movies after this (Duck You Sucker and Once Upon a Time in America), but truly left his mark on cinema.

And one more thing: anyone who doesn’t agree that Claudia Cardinale was a real babe needs his head examined.

Replace “real babe” with Gift To The World and, JAF, you’re almost there.
I have faith in you!
