The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Released 1962
Distributor Paramount Pictures

For better and for worse, John Ford understood tall tales helped shape America as much as the truth—The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is the director’s tribute to the lies we tell ourselves about our heroes. James Stewart is the country lawyer who gains fame and fortune thanks to John Wayne’s selfless act and Lee Marvin is Liberty Valance, the villain who makes it all possible. James Warner Bellah and Willis Goldbeck wrote the screenplay. In 2007 this not-so-simple parable was entered into the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
