Plan 9 From Outer Space

Released 1959
Distributor Distributors Corporation of America

Plan 9 From Outer Space is the prototypical Ed Wood movie, a low rent but mightily ambitious mix of old-fashioned horror and new-fangled science fiction (the original title was Grave Robbers from Outer Space). Adding to the fun are some of Ed’s favorite eccentrics including Vampira, Tor Johnson, and perhaps the oddest oddball of all, Criswell, whose moonstruck narration sets the looney-bin tone for the picture. Filmed in 1956 but unreleased until 1959, it’s perhaps best known for Bela Lugosi’s final film appearance.

I marvel at the tone of Dana’s commentary. A tip of the Guru Hat to this loving TFH. His historical context fills in a lot of blanks that I didn’t know that I had.

One of the most incompetently-made movies of all time…and it was still more watchable than Inside Llewyn Davis.
