Looking for Mr. Goodbar

Released 1977
Distributor Paramount Pictures
Diane Keaton, who passed away last week, was a great actress with unexpected range: at the same moment audiences were falling in love with Annie Hall, Keaton starred in the feel-bad movie of the year, Richard Brooks’s Looking for Mr. Goodbar. Leaving the sunny Annie far behind, Keaton plays an unhappy romantic who loses herself in a series of increasingly dangerous one-night stands. Well received by critics, the film boasts a stellar cast including Tuesday Weld, Richard Kiley, and a break-out role for Richard Gere.

I find it ironic this polarizing, unforgettable cinematic slice from the late 70’s isn’t finding its way to more people’s lists of Diane Keaton’s very best since her passing. Not only was it a hugely powerful, ‘cautionary tale’ to the dangers of picking up strangers, but would serve to ‘entree’ an even bigger, more deadly threat coming round the pike only a few years later. (The Aids Assault.)

Clever Name

That has to be one of the most misleading trailers ever.
