Two men, director Irvin Kershner (eight years before The Empire Strikes Back), and screenwriter Paul Zinder, were behind this bracing feminist manifesto disguised as a screwball comedy. Barbra Streisand, playing a woman in mid-pregnancy crisis, is haunted (and sometimes entertained) by a series of bizarre fantasies that are eye-opening in more ways than one. Backed by Streisand’s own production company, the film was a critical success but a box-office flop. Regardless, this one-of-a-kind film is more relevant than ever.

The first “Major Sneak Preview” (remember those days?) was at the Metro Theatre in San Francisco. I worked for United Artists Theaters as a booker so we were told what the film would be but the public had no idea. We were also told that Barbra would be attending the screening but didn’t want the audience to know he was there. She would come in after the film started. What an entrance! The exit door closest to the screen suddenly opened, the emergency light went on and La Streisand was the center of attention. Everyone was excited about this new company owned by Paul Newman, Barbra Streisand, Sidney Poitier, Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. Of the first year’s four films (1972) only Peckinpah’s THE GETAWAY with Steve McQueen was a box office success. I had been a big fan of director Irvin Kershner eight previous films but was disappointed at that showing. I will try it again.Movie Unlimited has it. https://www.moviesunlimited.com/up-the-sandbox/883929709786
