A movie so disturbing Michael Haneke made it twice, the director’s original is the gold standard for slow-burn sadism in film. In some ways the ultimate home invasion movie, Arno Frisch and Frank Giering play two torture-happy teens who take over an upper-middle-class home and systematically eliminate the inhabitants. The pointlessness of the violence is perhaps the most terrifying aspect of the carnage and the director’s coolly skillful approach only makes things worse (one of the goons even breaks the fourth wall by winking at the camera). Haneke himself directed a shot-for-shot remake (ala Van Sant’s Psycho) in 2007 starring Naomi Watts.
