Alan Spencer on
Silent Movie
Mel Brooks’ affectionate 1976 tribute to silent films is oddly subdued (for a Mel Brooks film) though the good-natured comedy still contains plenty of chuckles if not outright belly laughs. By deciding to keep his actors completely silent, Brooks lost much of the raucous verbal humor that propels so much of his best work. With cameo appearances by Burt Reynolds, Paul Newman and that chatterbox Marcel Marceau.

About Alan Spencer
Alan Spencer is best known for creating the classic satirical eighties sitcom Sledge Hammer! and the recent controversial "ultra violent" comedy Bullet in the Face for IFC. For years he's been regarded as one of Hollywood's top script doctors and has never lost a patient.
It was from that movie that I learned of Marcel Marceau.
