Alan Spencer on

Rocky Balboa

Released 2006
Distributor MGM

The sixth film in the long-running Rocky series, Rocky Balboa is director/writer Sly Stallone’s Lion in Winter take on the aging prizefighter, now retired and managing a restaurant in Philadelphia. Critics were kind to the film and in particular Stallone’s touching take on his bowed-but-unbroken alter-ego. The 2006 release was a box office success, due in no small part to the canny use of many of the original film’s signature touches including a rousing Bill Conti score that puts Rocky’s character right up there on Olympus with the other mythological gladiators.
