The Creature From The Black Lagoon
This week marks the 70th anniversary of the Creature’s first appearance. He was the last of the great Universal monsters, sporting a brilliant man-in-suit design that can’t be beat and has resisted years of attempted remakes and redesigns. Creature from the Black Lagoon is the most iconic of the now-classic Jack Arnold/William Alland sci-fi pix and probably the most famous of sci-fi fan Richard Carlson’s numerous genre starring turns. Ditto for co-stars Richard Denning and Julia Adams. One of the greatest 3-D movies of the ’50s. Even Marilyn Monroe was moved by the Gill Man’s doomed beauty-and-the-beast plight.

Rodman, a Professor and former Chair of the screenwriting program at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts and an artistic director of the Sundance Screenwriting Labs, wrote Savage Grace with Julianne Moore, August with Josh Hartnett and David Bowie, and the opening night film of the 2000 Sundance Film Festival, Joe Gould’s Secret, with Ian Holm and Stanley Tucci. The sleaziest character in Steven Soderbergh’s film The Underneath is named “Howard Rodman,” for reasons which need not be enumerated here.
My absolute favourite of all the old monster movies. Julia Adams was breathtaking.
