I remember catching this movie on a local station late on a Friday night. The nudity and violence were trimmed a bit, not not as much as you would suspect, and the film’s languorous pace was essentially intact. Seyrig is delicate and witty as the blood-drinker, and John Karlen is actually quite poignant as the husband trying to escape his rent-boy past. Worth seeing.

Unfortunately, one of Ford’s favorite stuntmen and bit players, Fred Kennedy, was killed doing a horse fall in this picture. Ford never got over it.

Actually, the Stephen King novel ‘Christine’ was published in 1983. Whether or not something like ‘Duel” and this film influenced this film is up to debate!

(c) 2010?! Is there a Del Toro time delay wormhole in operation? Anyone who looks at older films and tries to pick apart how make-up effects were achieved needs to see this just to marvel at Laughton’s face. It rivals anything by Jack Pierce or Lon Chaney for sheer realism.

There is one glaring error here, that this movie “anticipates Lewis’s upcoming directorial canon” .

By 1964, Lewis had already directed “The Bellboy”, “The Ladies’ Man”, “The Errand Boy”, “The Nutty Professor” and ” The Patsy” – his five best comedies.

Usually, Paramount released Jerry’s projects in spring or summer, followed by a second film later in the year. These were directed mostly by Tashlin and include “CinderFella”, “It’s Only Money”, “Who’s Minding the Store?” and “Orderly”.

Lewis’ last directorial effort for Paramount was “The Family Jewels” (1965).

The movie struck all the wrong nerves with this baby boomer. I thought its makers were pandering. Doesn’t help that I disliked Simon and Garfunkel enormously. Midlde class, middle brow. What IS Benjamin’s problem? Too much money? SCUBA gear for birthday? Sleeping with Bancroft? And the cross deal at the end–I winced. I was embarrassed. Amazing that Buck Henry, who is funny, wrote a script with not one smile and helped turn Catch 22, the funniest novel since Lucky Jim, into a ponderous and plodding film to boot. I blame Nichols. He was great with Elaine May, great later, but his first films were all duds, I think.

Myra and Catch 22 opened the same week… But MASH is earlier. MASH and Myra are the same studio. But these were the days of slow rollouts, so conceivable all three films played in the same city at the same time.

Actually MASH and Catch-22 opened the same day. I saw them both that day along with the other Big Hollywood Movie that opened that day — Myra Breckinridge.
Altman got the zeitgeist. Nichols was wrapped up in Fellini. He got over all that a few years later making much simpler and more direct works like Postcards From the Edge.
Nichols’ Catch-22 is indeed impressive looking, but it’s superficial.

I saw on IMDB that Imogen Millais-Scott was never in another movie. Did she get her vision back, or was she blind for life? What illness caused her blindness?

“Movies You’ve Never Heard Of” is one of my favorite TFH themes. So when I cued this one up I was predisposed to liking it, BUT……….Dan’s commentary has one of the best “making of…..” stories I have ever heard. Now I REALLY want to see this movie. 5-Stars!!!
